Reason 101 not to go to the Catholic Church…

This article reminded me why, as soon as I was old enough and long before I identified myself as an atheist, I quit attending the Catholic church. Here is a 72 year old priest, by accounts beloved by his parishioners, fired because he dares to think for himself, at least a little.

This priest dared to put a little of himself into the mass instead of simply reading the pre-defined liturgy that was recently rewritten for the church. Didn’t they have it right before? Well, anyway, he has been doing this for years and the bishop of Belleville, after giving him fair warning, just fired him over it. Hopefully the parishioners will star boycotting that church. I know I would.

I can honestly thank my Catholic school upbringing for one thing: To this day I cannot stand to have anyone tell me what or how to think about anything. I hated it as a kid and I don’t tolerate it now.

Follow up: Check out some of the comments on the STLToday site at the original link. I thought more people would be mad about this, and some were. But I really underestimated how much some people positively believe in not questioning their faith and that the Catholic church is correct about everything that comes from the hierarchy. At first I honestly thought some of the comments were facetious, but I think some of these people are deadly serious. Frightening…
